The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court recently ruled that a group of Franklin County farm workers are entitled to overtime pay. Though farm work is exempt from the state’s overtime laws, the Court found the work the farmers performed was not considered farming. By siding with the fifteen plaintiffs in the case of Ana Arias Villano & others vs Chang & Sons Enterprises of South Deerfield, the ruling overturns a ruling issued by the Mass. Superior Court. ACLU Massachusetts’ Bill Newman and migrant farm worker advocate Claudia Quintero joined Connecting Point‘s Ray Hershel to talk about the significance of the farmer workers overtime ruling.
