If the Milky Way had a tune, what might it sound like? That’s what astronomer Mark Heyer, a research professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, wanted to find out. So, with an algorithm, he and his team turned molecular line emissions (gasses) into a jazzy blues composition they call “Milky Way Blues,” which enables us to “hear” the sounds of the Milky Way Galaxy. Where did he come up with his out-of-this-world idea? He explains to Connecting Point host Carrie Saldo.
