As we close out Black History Month, Connecting Point looks at the crucial role Springfield and surrounding towns played in the Underground Railroad, helping slaves escape from the South before the Thirteenth Amendment outlawed slavery.
Carolee McGrath sat down with author and historian Joe Carvalho and Wayne Phaneuf, the executive editor of the Springfield Republican, who co-wrote The Struggle for Freedom: The History of African Americans in Western Massachusetts. They were joined by LuJuana Hood, Executive Director of the Pan African Historical Museum in Springfield to learn more about this obscure part of Springfield history.
