Like many health care workers, Liz Whynott—the Director of HIV Health and Prevention at Tapestry Health—has observed a disturbing trend in recent years. The opioid epidemic has meant a rise in IV drug use, shared needles, and spikes in Hepatitis C, which can destroy the liver. The recently Springfield Needle Exchange hopes to help curb the spread of disease by offering drug users new needles in exchange for used needles. Needle exchanges, or Syringe Access Programs, can be lifesavers, but can also stir up controversy. Whynott shared her view point on the issue with host Carrie Saldo.
