Next month, the Springfield City Council will meet and determine who will be a part of the council’s leadership team in 2020. The Council President and Vice President determine the council’s agenda for the year and which issues will be debated. Last year, several topics—including the formation of a civilian police commission, adding a city chief diversity officer, and the use of facial recognition technology—led to conflict between the council and Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. Some of these issues were resolved; others were not.
Current President Justin Hurst and Vice President Marcus Williams led the thirteen city councilors last year. Carrie Saldo sits down with Hurst and Williams for a recap of what the council worked in in 2019.. Salso also asks Hurst, who is running for Council President again in 2020, why he wants to continue in the role.
