The opioid epidemic has affected each community throughout western New England, from the inner city to the suburbs. Substance abuse can destroy families and often leave parents with feelings of guilt and shame as well as confusion as to how best help a child. The Parent Support Group of Western Mass. is a peer-support group run by two women who know all too well the heartache caused by substance abuse disorder. Barbara Gallo, who facilitates the group each Wednesday night at Providence Behavioral Health Hospital, explains the program and the benefits of peer support.
