When it came time for Destinee Meeker to teach her fourth graders multiplication and division, she wanted to think outside the box to engage her students. Meeker transformed her classroom at Holyoke’s McMahon Elementary School into a Math Trauma Unit. By working in six different “operating rooms,” students get hands on experience with how math can be used in the real world.
