The iconic Holyoke Merry-Go-Round has been a staple in Paper City for decades. Families first began enjoying the ride in 1929, when it was an attraction at Mountain Park. But when the park closed in 1987, the fate of the merry-go-round was unknown. In one of Holyoke’s most successful community preservation efforts, residents rallied together and saved the merry-go-round. Now installed in Holyoke Heritage State Park, the preserved carousel can continue to be enjoyed for years to come. This year, the community once again rallied around the merry-go-round to celebrate a very special milestone—the attraction’s 90th birthday. Connecting Point’s Zydalis Bauer brings us the story.
