Eighty-nine lawmakers sent a letter to Beacon Hill after the Healthy Incentives Program was suspended for the season. The HIP program offers SNAP recipients a rebate for buying fresh fruits and vegetables at local farms and farmers’ markets. HIP is usually suspended for a few months each year after the money budgeted by the state is exhausted. Massachusetts State Senator Jo Comerford and State Representative Natalie Blais both signed the letter sent to Governor Baker earlier this month. Blais and Comerford joined Carrie Saldo to discuss their concerns about this year’s HIP suspension.
