After Hurricane Maria, many skilled nurses were forced to leave Puerto Rico.  A new program at Holyoke Community College helps these Puerto Rican nurses attain licenses to practice in Massachusetts. Known as the “Western Mass Pipeline for Puerto Rican Nurses,” the program offers English as a Second Language classes to prepare students to pass both the language exam and the nursing exam required by the state. Kermit Dunkelberg, Assistant Vice President of Adult Education at HCC, Nilsa Santos, a nurse from Puerto Rico, and Frank Martinez, a nurse from Puerto Rico and program graduate who works for MassHire, explain how the program benefits western Mass residents.
