Earlier this year, Graduate Women in STEM, a student group at the University of Massachusetts Amherst published “Broken Silence.” The report detailed sexual harassment and abuse experienced by students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) departments at UMass. These findings are not unique to UMass, and students from colleges and universities across the US have broken the silence about their difficult experiences. At UMass, a task force studied the student report and released its own findings. Prof. Tricia Serio, Task Force co-chair, and Joelle Labastide, Graduate Women in STEM co-chair, joined Carrie Saldo to discuss harassment in STEM and how the flagship campus is addressing the issue.
