Establishing a Safe Cities ordinance in Greenfield is a charged issue and debate around the ordinance has swirled for months. First proposed this summer, the ordinance was passed by the town council. However, the measure was challenged and placed on hold. After being passed again, the Safe City Ordinance was vetoed by the mayor. In November, the ordinance was included as a citizen’s petition question and approved by voters. Carrie Saldo spoke with Javier Luengo-Garrido, the ACLU Massachusetts’ Immigrant Protection Project Coordinator, about Greenfield’s debate and the upsurge in these ordinances across the region.
