Gisella Collazo has taken sanctuary in the South Congregational United Church of Christ in Springfield. A native of Peru in the United States illegally since 2001, she moved into the church rather than face deportation. Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno has criticized the Springfield Interfaith Sanctuary Coalition, which offered Collazo and her two children protection, saying the decision violates the law on several fronts. Louis Mitchell, a member of the Sanctuary Coalition and assistant minister of South Congregational Church, sat down with Carrie Saldo to explain why they chose to get involved in Ms. Collazo’s situation.
