Nearly 26 million people in the United States struggle with diabetes and another 79 million people are “pre-diabetes,” according to the American Diabetes Association.

Berkshire County resident Derek Gentile thought he was suffering from the flu. But he was actually experiencing a severe complication of diabetes that resulted in partial amputation of his right leg.

The long-time Berkshire Eagle reporter, and author of several books, was diagnosed with the disease several years ago but he failed to heed his doctor’s orders. Now, Gentile speaks candidly with Connecting Point about his life, both before and after surgery.
