You probably don’t think about the Long Island Sound when you head to the Connecticut River, but actions in western Mass can affect the animal life and environment downstream. When sewer waste makes it into the river in Massachusetts and Connecticut, the waste heads downstream and eventually ends up in the sound.
Andrew Fisk, Director of the Connecticut River Conservancy, and Joshua Schimmel, Executive Director of Springfield Water and Sewer Department, discuss how much western Mass waste ends up in the river and if new water quality tests may help stop sewer leakage into the waterway.
