Author Winthrop Smith

January 2014 marked the 100th birthday of the financial powerhouse known as Merrill Lynch. The former chairman & son of one of ML’s founders went to Amherst College and currently lives in VT. Winthrop Smith is one of the few people to have known all of the CEOs of Merrill Lynch. He recently wrote a book, Catching Lightning in a Bottle: How Merrill Lynch Revolutionized the Financial World, and talks about the beginnings and history of Merrill Lynch.

K-9 Vests

Connecting Point visits the Connecticut Department of Correction’s K9 Unit and meets the officers and their canines. We learn about what the dogs are trained for and also, how recently they were given 9 bullet and stab protective vests for the canines to keep them safe. Vested Interest in K9s Inc., is an all-volunteer charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests for law enforcement dogs throughout the country.

Celebrating Winter Sports: International Ice Skating Center

For our February series on winter sports, we headed to the International Skating Center of CT in Simsbury, CT to talk to their figure skating director, Vadim Naumov and his wife Evgenia Shishkova about being the famous Olympian and World Championship pair skaters, and also their young son Maxim is following in their steps and was the 2013 US Figure Skating Juvenile Boy’s National Champion.

History of the Valentine’s Day Card

Esther Howland, a Mt. Holyoke College graduate and MA resident, was the “mother” of the Valentine’s Day card. Hear about how she got this idea, was able to implement it and see some of her designs as Leslie Fields, Head of Archives and Special Collections at Mount Holyoke College, talks to us about this local connection to Valentine’s Day!
