On the Road in the Hilltowns: Chester Railway Museum
When constructed in 1841, the Western Railroad was the largest and most difficult railroad project ever attempted. When it was completed it was the highest (1458 ft.) and longest (150 miles) ever built. It’s steep and imposing grade over the hills of western MA begins in the town of Chester. This meant added support for the railroad was stationed in that town making Chester a railroad town. 150 families had someone who worked for the railroad. Dave Pierce is President of the Chester Foundation who now oversees the Chester Railway Station & Museum. He talked with Jim Madigan at the Museum and shared more about this piece of American history.
