Diabetes Awareness Month

It may not be a coincidence that November is Diabetes Awareness Month as the holidays from Thanksgiving through the New Year pose the greatest challenge for those with diabetes–kids to adults. Dr. Chelsea Gordner, Director of Inpatient Diabetes at Baystate Medical Center, gives helpful tips and advice to our viewers before the holiday season gets started so those wanting to enjoy the holiday season won’t have to worry about the effect that the holiday’s foods will have on their diabetes.

Allied Rehab Centers

Those with developmental disabilities have the highest rate of unemployment out of any group in the United States– it’s at 80%! Allied Rehab Centers, a private non-profit organization in north central Connecticut, has been serving individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities and those with brain injuries. Melissa Trzepacz, Director of Employment Services and Michael Eugenio, Employment Coordinator at Allied Rehab Centers talk about helping these people get jobs that are geared to helping them lead productive lives. They also run two micro businesses that employ these challenged people so they can have a job.

Holiday Travel

Rania Kfuri gives us her tips for traveling around the holidays with kids in tow. She started Free Like Birdie, which makes traveling accessories for families, after traveling with her kids and will give families some useful tips/things she’s learned along the way.

Making It Here: Sea Chest Maker

Although the military stopped issuing sea chests in the late 1950’s, local woodworker J. Paul Lanza carries out the nautical tradition from his workshop in Simsbury, CT. Lanza, 78, built more than 300 homes on Cape Cod during his career, including the John F. Kennedy Memorial in Hyannis.  Producer Dave Fraser visits him and shares his story.
