Holyoke Public Schools Receivership
Dr. Stephen Zrike has been chosen as the new leader for the Holyoke Public Schools. Zrike was announced as the permanent receiver for the district when the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education voted last May to put the district into state receivership, citing years of underperformance. He talks with Connecting Point Correspondent Carolee McGrath.
Common Core
Common Core has become a hot topic across the country and right here in Massachusetts. The state adopted the national education standards in 2010 and more than 40 states did the same. But some states have now dropped common core and there are calls to end it in the commonwealth. Connecting Point contributor Carolee McGrath spoke with Donna Colorio, who chairs the End Common Core Massachusetts ballot initiative and special education teacher Carrie Foley and asked them why they are opposed to what many say are superior education standards.
Making it Here: Disc Golf
Disc Golf was born due to the handy work of “Steady Ed” Headrick, father of the Wham-O Frisbee. Through his involvement in frisbees and all disc activities in the late 1960s, Frisbee Golf was born using “object” courses. It is played very similar to traditional golf except with discs as opposed to clubs and a ball and is a sport that is really taking off. Producer Dave Fraser caught up with some local disc golfers on a course at Crane Hill Park in Wilbraham recently and shares this story.
