Helping Returning Veterans

The unemployment rate for veterans who served on active duty in the military at any time since September 2001 stands at nine percent, that’s according to a recent report by the bureau of labor statistics. The Springfield/CT metropolitan area is about two thirds down on that list. Joining me to talk about the importance of helping returning veterans and a new initiative called boots to business is Sgt. Bee Week

Piti Theatre Co., based in Shelburne Falls, is coordinating a series of “Bee Weeks” to raise awareness of the threats to the honey bee, highlight the significance of bees to worldwide health and well-being, and teach children and adults how to help bees thrive in their communities. Amped for Education

Smith Academy teacher Jeff Pluta discusses “Amped for Education,” the program he started that’s built a high school in an impoverished village in Nicaragua. Joining him will be Dylan Talbot, a Frontier Regional High School student who has traveled to Nicaragua to help with the “AMPED for Education” project.

On tonight’s Making it Here segment, we feature Wilbraham photographer Xenophon Beake who has been in the photography business for over half a century. He also has won multiple prestigious awards and has been lecturing in both traditional and digital capture photography for over 35 years. He talks to us about all that and also about his very first Browning camera to now using a fully digital camera.
