We begin our series on baseball history in the region tonight with a look at Pynchon Park in Springfield. Originally named Hampden Park it was built in 1853 and had various uses throughout the years including bicycle racing, football games and eventually professional baseball. In 1950’s and 60’s Pynchon park was home to minor league baseball affiliates of the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants. This year marks 50 years since professional baseball was played in Springfield and Producer Dave Fraser talked with long time Springfield Republican Sports Columnist Garry Brown and Guy McLain, Director of the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History to relive some of the memories of Pynchon Park.
