Preserving the Memories of Western Mass Veterans

On Monday, the United States will mark Memorial Day, a day to honor and remember those who died in service to our country.

Here in western Mass, one Air Force veteran is doing his part to preserve the memories of the servicemen and women interred in cemeteries in Westfield and surrounding towns. In addition to extensively research, Theroux works with volunteers to restore local veterans’ gravestones to both honor their memory and their service, even when they are no longer here to tell their stories.

And more western Mass stories tonight…

CISA’s annual Field Notes storytelling event looks a bit different this year – instead of a live event, CISA will screen a pre-recorded show on the big screen at the Northfield Drive-In. Meet two of the featured storytellers, Jake Krian (Red Gate Farm) and Meryl LaTronica (Just Roots), who offer a glimpse into the lives of the farmers and workers who prepare our food.

Then, the Eric Carle Museum is marking Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) month with a new exhibit featuring artwork that depicts Asian Americans living their everyday lives. Author-illustrator Grace Lin, who curated Asians, Everyday, explains what inspired the exhibit.

Finally, art instructor and author Phyllis Kornfeld joins us to talk about teaching art to incarcerated individuals inside correctional facilities across the US and her new book Cellblock Visions: Prison Art in America.
