Skiing and ice skating are beloved winter past times in New England and the Northeast. But learning how to ski and skate can be expensive and not always accessible for all community members. For the past two decades, Springfield Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood has made ice skating more accessible by offering lessons at Cyr Arena in Springfield’s Forest Park. The Stephen O’Brien Memorial Learn to Skate Program is free for all area children—all they need to do is bring a helmet to the rink. Carolee McGrath hit the ice with the Springfield PD and found that skating is a great family activity—even if you’ve never laced up skates before.
