With about $1,000 per burial offered by the state Department of Transitional Assistance, very few Massachusetts funeral directors are willing to bury the bodies of the extremely poor or the anonymous. Arranging a funeral on such a small budget can mean the directors take on debt to perform the service. This windfall between funds and cost can leave nursing home directors or police officers with nowhere to take the deceased and turn into a potential public health issue. Noah Bombard of MassLive joins Carrie Saldo to discuss his on-going investigative series “Who Buries the Poor?” that explores this issue.
