American Kestrel Falcon & The Kestrel Nest Box Project

The American Kestrel is the smallest and one of the most common falcons in North America, but being small has its challenges. Kestrels are prey for larger raptors and the grass land habitats where they nest are often taken for building and housing developments. The Kestrel Nest Box project is an effort to help boost their chances of adding to the next generation. With the help of volunteers, nest boxes designed especially for kestrels have been built and installed around the Valley since 2012. In 2014, three of those boxes provided safe homes for 10 feisty baby Kestrels. Producer Dave Fraser visited a few of the Kestrel box locations and shares this story.
