Cops Lives Matter

Police work is about keeping people safe in their communities.  But over the last year and a half, police involved shootings and the subsequent public reaction in places like Ferguson, Baltimore and Chicago have had many call into question whether cops are really the good guys. Groups such as Black Lives Matter have held demonstrations across the country and in Springfield (last spring) to protest against what they perceive as police misconduct or even police brutality.

But Former Holyoke Police Chief Anthony Scott, now retired, is speaking in favor of police officers across the country.

Photographer Bill Hughes

A collection of photographs featuring residents of the North End of Springfield taken in 1991 are currently on display in the Wood Museum of Springfield History. The images donated by Photographer Bill Hughes depict the Latino community in the North End of Springfield, and show, in the words of the Photographer, “an ever-present and quiet, underlying source of strength and optimism…visible even in those individuals who had lived a life of much hardship and strife.”

Holyoke High School Anti-Bullying Initiative

State Attorney General Maura Healey and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft are launching a joint initiative aimed at educating young people about relationship violence. The new campaign, called “Game Change,” seeks to train teachers, coaches and students in public high schools across Massachusetts to help deal with this issue.

Connecting Point Contributor Carolee McGrath went to Holyoke High School to talk with Principal Stephen Sullivan and Director of Athletics Melanie Martin to learn how their school got involved with this program.
