The numbers show that women are under-represented in the music industry, and most recording artists and writers are men. A new crop of female artists, such as Cardi B, are challenging gender norms and pushing back against female stereotypes in music. But some wonder if the images they present can work against the cause of gender equality as they try to climb to the top of the charts in an industry dominated by men. Carolee McGrath sat down with Whitney Battle Baptiste, Associate Professor of Anthropology at UMass Amherst and the director of the W.E.B. DuBois Center at UMass, to learn more.
